The Institute's mission is to reduce death and disability from cardiovascular disease, diabetes and related disorders; two prevalent and complex diseases responsible for the most deaths and the highest health costs in the world. The Alpha-1 Association of Australia (AAA), was established on 15 June 2005. It is non-profit Health Promotion Charity endorsed as such by the Australian Taxation Office.

The AAA was established following recognition of the absence of a central body of information and contacts for those affected by and working with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1). Alpha-1 is a genetically inherited medical condition which can affect the liver and lungs. The AAA has produced a booklet which contains more detail about the condition. See our Links section also.

MS Research Australia the largest not-for-profit organisation dedicated to funding and coordinating MS research in Australia, as part of the worldwide effort to unravel the complexity of MS. The primary mission is to accelerate research towards the prevention, better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for MS.

Parkinson's Australia is the national peak body and charity representing more than 80,000 Australians living with Parkinson’s. Parkinson' Australia advocates for the Parkinson's community, promotes best practice models of service delivery, works to increase awareness of Parkinson's and provides information and education on Parkinson's symptoms, diagnosis, causes and treatments.

Pancare Foundation is Australia’s not-for-profit pancreatic cancer organisation. Our purpose is to increase survival and provide support to people affected by pancreatic cancer and other upper gastrointestinal cancers.

We have one clear mission - to end the permanence of paralysis caused by spinal cord injury.

Epilepsy is a seizure disorder that can affect anyone at any time, regardless of age, gender, level of intelligence, culture or background. It is estimated that over 800,000 people in Australia will be diagnosed with epilepsy at some stage in life, with sadly 40% never being able to stop or control their seizures. Over 55% of Australians (13.2 million people) know someone with epilepsy, and around 65 million people are affected worldwide.

Epilepsy Action delivers innovative services that increase epilepsy awareness, understanding, knowledge and skills to assist people with epilepsy across Australia to optimise their life outcomes. Our vision is optimal living for people with epilepsy. Our team of highly qualified service co-ordinators, registered nurses and community development officers is equipped with a rich base of technical expertise, built up during five decades of services to the community.

Shake It Up Australia Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2011 by Clyde Campbell, a father of three and business owner who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2009 at the age of 44. Following his diagnosis, Clyde set out to learn as much as he could about Parkinson’s to determine what he could do in a practical sense to assist. His search led him to the Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) for Parkinson’s Research in the United States and the remarkable work they do to fund medical research around the world targeted at finding better treatments on the path to finding a cure for Parkinson’s.

The approach MJFF take to assessing, funding and project managing world’s best research all over the globe eliminates redundancy, ensures efficiency and unites the global community in the quest to find a cure. The Shake It Up Foundation established a partnership with The Michael J. Fox Foundation and we are now the largest non-government funder of Parkinson’s research across multiple research institutes in Australia. Since we started in 2011 we have invested $3 million into Australian research in our pursuit to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. 100% of all income we raise is directed to funding Australian research which is made possible by our founding director's commitment to cover all administration costs. In addition most Australian research projects we support are funded 50/50 by The Michael J Fox Foundation which means we can double the reach of our funds raised.

The Robert Connor Dawes (RCD) Foundation is battling paediatric brain tumours and supporting brain matters in the area of:
Research: Supporting high impact research that will improve treatments including early detection, accurate diagnosis and surgery and post-surgery treatments.

The charity was established following the death of Isabella and Marcus from an incurable brain cancer known as DIPG. Our two families were frustrated at the lack of research, which was the reason why treatment was not available. We decided to address this problem directly.

The charity works closely with researchers in Australia to develop treatments for children with brain cancer. Our focus is DIPG and similar brain cancers, collectively referred to as diffuse midline gliomas. We fund research, support meetings that bring scientists together to share their latest insights and fund clinical trials to bring promising new therapies to the clinic. We also seek to increase the profile of brain cancer so that it becomes a priority for support.

Breast Cancer Trials is a group of world-leading breast cancer doctors and researchers based in Australia and New Zealand with a commitment to exploring and finding better treatments for people affected by breast cancer through clinical trials research.

Laura was only 31 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer

She and her husband had two little boys who weren’t even at school yet. Laura had both her breasts removed and chemotherapy treatment.

“I panicked when I first felt the lump, but I convinced myself I was too young for it to be anything sinister.
Hours after my diagnosis, I was numb. I couldn’t eat, cry, sleep or even talk. As the days went on I felt a huge range of emotions. Fear was a big one. And sadness.

There were so many questions. Why me? How was I going to tell my kids? My mind was consumed with thoughts about what my future would bring and not seeing my babies grow up.

To me the ‘c’ word meant a death sentence and something I didn’t want to think about.
But the reality was my cancer was very aggressive. I chose to have a bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. Surgery was tough. I had to spend excruciating hours in nuclear medicine, having radioactive dye injected into my breasts so they could find my lymph nodes and test whether the cancer had spread.

Following my surgery I had a high risk of infection and was isolated from everyone for five weeks. Not always being able to see my kids and cuddle them every day was heart-breaking.

Then, on top of everything, I contracted neutropenia while I was going through chemotherapy. It’s a condition that reduces the number of white blood cells in your body, which makes it harder for your immune system to fight off infections. Everyone had to wear masks around me. It was very confronting and I felt so alone.

It sounds silly, but I sometimes felt that my emotions would be a burden on others.
When I felt like being sad, I would stop myself because everyone thought I was so strong and I didn’t want to let them down.

So I would make jokes at my own expense and then cry in the bathroom where no one could see me. I still do this at times.

People see the happy, easy-going Laura that they know and love. But there will always be an inner turmoil that will never go away.
I will never just be able to get on with life as normal. I have to find a new normal.

The treatment I had put me into early mesopause. I get hot flushes, have gained weight, and I will never be able to have another child.

But my surgeon is confident and so is my oncologist that the cancer is gone. And I am too of course.

I feel incredibly lucky and grateful to be here.

I’ve learned to see all the little things in my life with a new appreciation because I’m still here to do them.

Being alive is no longer a given. It’s a privilege, and one that I will never take for granted.

In August 1957, Mary Raine signed the Deed of Trust bequeathing her property empire to the University of Western Australia for the purpose of funding medical research. The Raine Medical Research Foundation was established and has now allocated in excess of $50m to medical research in Western Australia. The Foundation has supported some of WA's most successful medical research leaders at an early stage in their careers, such as Professor Fiona Wood, Professor Fiona Stanley and Professor Peter Klinken. The Foundation commits in excess of $1.3m towards competitive research programs every year including major grants, fellowships, research collaboration awards and travel prizes.

Werribee Hospital Foundation works with local community to raise vital funds for Wyndham’s only public hospital, The Werribee Mercy Hospital.

Since 1993, the foundation has been providing significant financial support to Werribee Mercy Hospital, that now serves the greater Wyndham region.

We rely on the generous support of our community through donations, grants and bequests to support the purchase of life changing medical equipment, research and innovation.

This work is essential in ensuring Werribee Mercy Hospital can continue to provide a wide range of vital healthcare services for the community as well as developing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

1 in 20 kids is born with a birth defect or genetic disease, and world-wide over 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year. CMRI is asking the difficult questions and working hard to find real answers so we can give these children a healthier future.

The Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) is a Non-Profit, Health Promotion Charity that my wife Kirralee and I began in 2014, after I was diagnosed with brain cancer. We began the Foundation when we realised how underfunded brain cancer was in Australia in comparison to other cancers. The lack of funding meant very little research into treatments or cures for brain cancer and, as a result, not much has changed in the shocking brain cancer mortality rates over the past 30 years.

We had no idea when we started our Foundation and set about raising funds for some much needed research, the incredible amount of support we would receive from people everywhere.
To date the Foundation has raised $4.7million in just 4 years, funded a Brain Cancer Biobank, Travel Grants Program, 10 research projects including 2 Fellowships and a Brain Cancer Care Coordinator. Amazing! And all thanks to our supporters and our tireless volunteers.

Ultimately research means better outcomes for brain cancer patients but research is expensive - so we will continue to make it our priority to raise funds and ensure those funds get to where they are needed most. Our Foundation is a very small organisation that runs mostly on the generosity of our supporters and some community grants which allows us to keep the running costs to a bare minimum so that one day, maybe in my lifetime, together, we will find a cure for brain cancer.

The APF’s mission is to provide support to those who have experienced pituitary gland conditions. We promote awareness and disseminate information among the medical community, public, pituitary patients and their families.

Cherish Women’s Cancer Foundation’s primary goal is to find and fund clinical research that results in better treatments for gynaecological cancer patients that can be developed and implemented quickly. Our secondary goals include funding research into prevention, early detection and a cure.

If we don’t create ways to fund research into gynaecological cancer, we simply wouldn’t improve survival rates, treatment options, our knowledge about ways to prevent it and ways to detect it earlier. This is because the only way to fund improvements in this area is through fundraising.

Each year in Australia, more than 6000 women are diagnosed with gynaecological cancer and this number is increasing each year. Almost a third will not survive their disease. More than ever before, we need to increase research into quality treatments as this group of cancers is costing Australia $182 million a year, affecting women’s quality of life and having an impact it shouldn’t be having in this day and age.

Funding into research by the Australian Government has been drastically reduced since 2008, from $14 million to $7 million, even though all of the statistics show it is an increasingly prevalent cancer type among women. We cannot continue to wait. The current status quo isn’t good enough. Cherish was established in 2012 to raise crucial funds to support research projects which have the potential to produce real outcomes for those touched by gynaecological cancer.

Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) is the largest child health research institute in Australia and one of the top five worldwide. With a team of more than 1900 talented researchers dedicated to making discoveries to prevent and treat childhood conditions. Many of the researchers are also clinicians at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, where the Institute is based. Their research is informed by the problems facing their patients but it also means when a discovery is made, this is quickly transformed into practical treatments for children in the hospital.

MCRI research improves the lives of millions of kids each year. We research health conditions including diabetes, allergies, asthma, premature birth and mental health problems, which are on the rise in our children, and conditions including cancer and genetic disorders that remain unsolved.

Cystic Fibrosis is a life-shortening, inherited disease that is typically diagnosed shortly after birth. This condition attacks the digestive system and slowly shuts down the lungs.

There is average life expectancy for someone living with cystic fibrosis is 37. It is cutting lives in half.

More than 1,000,000 Australians carry the CF gene.

over 3300 Australians are living with cystic fibrosis.

There is NO cure.

Cystic Fibrosis Queensland provides specialised support to people living with this chronic and life-shortening condition.

The Children’s Tumour Foundation is the leading non-government not-for-profit organisation dedicated to raising money to fund vital research, awareness and practical support for sufferers of Neurofibromatosis (NF); a genetic disorder with no known cure.

A condition affecting 1 in 2,500 people, it causes tumours to grow on nerves throughout the body that can lead to a range of significant health issues, including blindness, cancer, bone abnormalities, deafness, learning difficulties and disfigurement. It is painful, unpredictable and progressive.

Importantly, it can happen to anyone. NF does not discriminate by gender, ethnicity, social-economic status or geographical location and 50% of sufferers have no family history of the condition. Those who do have the gene mutation will also have a 1 in 2 chance of passing it onto their children.

NF is a lifelong condition that requires ongoing monitoring and assessment through several medical specialties. We support those impacted by NF by investing in medical research, providing access to critical support services that help reduce social isolation and improve treatment options, while also educating the community.

Why do we exist? Because tumours should never be a person's normal so we will do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes until a cure can be found.

Fight Cancer Foundation is a national charity dedicated to giving hope and saving lives by providing care, treatment and support for cancer patients and their families and funding vital research into cancer treatment and cures.

Founded in 1989 as the Bone Marrow Donor Institute to establish Australia’s first bone marrow donor registry and find a cure for leukaemia, the organisation’s broader scope now provides support services for patients with blood and other cancers.

Our support services include affordable accommodation for rural and interstate patients accessing major treating hospitals in New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria, and education support to young learners undergoing cancer treatment in New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria.

Blue Knot Foundation is a specialist Australian not-for-profit organisation that advocates, builds and delivers supports to/for people, families and communities affected by childhood trauma and abuse.

Childhood trauma directly affects an estimated 5 million Australian adults. It also affects their family, their children and their communities.

Research shows that when survivors receive the right help, recovery is possible. And that when survivors who are parents receive the right support, the intergenerational impacts of childhood trauma can be intercepted. It is a time for hope and optimism.

Blue Knot Foundation is the thought and practice leader in the field of complex trauma. It provides professional support, information, resources, education and training programs, as well as a trauma-informed approach to care to improve the lives of adults traumatised and abused as children.

Australian Rotary Health is one of the largest independent funders of mental health research within Australia. In addition to Mental Health research, we also provide funding into a broad range of general health areas, provide scholarships for Rural Medical and Nursing Students, as well as Indigenous Health Scholars. Australian Rotary Health has a broad vision to improve the health and wellbeing of all Australians.

Mercy Health Foundation supports Mercy Health by advancing care and improving life outcomes for people in need. Muscular Dystrophy Australia (MDA) is the one-stop-shop for information and support for the 1 in 625 Australians, adults and children, living with one of the 60 neuromuscular disorders under the muscular dystrophy umbrella. These are rare conditions and people can receive a diagnosis of MD at any age.
Our Client Services Team assists families and individuals who are newly diagnosed; connecting them with doctors, neurologists, allied health professionals, and the Neuromuscular Clinic at the Royal Children’s Hospital. MDA also provides education and respite opportunities.

The Can Too Foundation is a Health Promotion Foundation that transforms lives through fun, fitness, friends and fundraising. Beginners and experienced people alike are given professional coaching as part of a team to run or swim and bike in events – including marathon, half marathon 10km and 7 or 14km relay runs; as well as ocean swims and triathlons. In return, participants raise valuable funds that go directly towards funding brilliant, innovative cancer researchers. Can Too is for everybody.

The Centenary Institute is a world-leading independent Medical Research Institute. Our strength is in uncovering disease mechanisms and applying this knowledge to improve diagnostics and treatments for patients and find cures for some of the most chronic diseases affecting today’s society.

Queensland Eye Institute (QEI) Foundation is Queensland’s largest independent academic research institute devoted to eye related health and diseases. QEI Foundation works every day to save sight by providing innovation and excellence in research, education and clinical care to reduce eye disease, improve eye health, and ultimately eliminate preventable blindness in the community.

With state-of-the-art facilities in South Brisbane, including the QEI Clinic, South Bank Day Hospital, Queensland Electro-Diagnostic and Imaging Centre, laboratories, medical library, microsurgical teaching laboratory and auditorium, it is also the home of the QEI Foundation.

The Foundation was originally called Patient’s Aid Society and was formed by the late Bruce Williams in 1967. It was his wish that people with arthritis would have access to a group providing fellowship, social support and assistance in daily living. The organisation has grown consistently over the years and today has more than 3,000 members and 35 branches and support groups across New South Wales.

As Australia's peak national non-government cancer control organisation, we are leading the change needed to reduce the impact of cancer now and in the future. Cancer Council leads national action to improve cancer control and care for people with cancer and their caregivers.

Our independence means we can direct our funding where it is most needed and influence the public agenda to improve outcomes for people with all types of cancer, and across all stages of the cancer journey.
