What is Human Trafficking?
Human trafficking is the mobilisation, coercion and exploitation of people in modern day slavery. Human trafficking occurs in sex work, domestic servitude, hospitality, construction, and in forced marriage. Human trafficking is happening in Australia and overseas.
What are we doing about Human Trafficking?
There are many organisations working in Australia and internationally to eradicate human trafficking and support the people who have been exploited. We have a responsibility as global citizens to work together to fix this complex problem.
My personal response...
Having seen the important work around the world to combat exploitation with my own eyes, I cannot ignore a personal call to be involved and do something about it. My role as an occupational therapist, academic, and researcher positions me in a space where I must respond. So, I am travelling to Cape Town, South Africa in May 2018 to present a paper on Human Trafficking and Occupational Injustice at the World Federation of Occupational Therapy Congress.
What can you do?
You can help me support two organisations working with people who have been trafficked. I have connected with both of these projects in the last 5 years. They are changing lives and they need our support!
The Freedom Hub exists to help people in Australia who have been trafficked and they partner in the fight to end global slavery. https://thefreedomhub.org/
Every donation makes a difference!
We want to raise $1000 for each project. If we hit that target, we will double it. Let’s see what we can do! If you come for coffee and a chat on Friday the 6th April, you can also bring a donation on the night. Please message me if you need more details.
Let's talk about this a bit more!
Please come for coffee and dessert to hear more about my upcoming trip and the important work of this organisation.
