"If there is effort, there is accomplishment"
Kanō Jigorō the founder of Judo
Lucca Di Stefano loved Judo and was part of an amazing grass roots Judo community through his club IJudo in Epping, Melbourne, Australia. He was a relative latecomer to the sport, taking up Judo at the age of 14. His Judo practice helped him harness the abundance of energy he had, as many young men have, into a positive pursuit of self-growth. He travelled far and wide throughout Australia to attend camps and competitions on a state and national level. Lucca was coached by ex-Olympian Sensei Dennis Iverson, who was an incredible mentor both in Judo and in life.
Aged only 18, Lucca sadly lost his life on 14 June 2020, before he was able to realise his full potential with Judo and in life. He was brave, strong, generous, and resilient, all the qualities we look for in our young men. Skills which the practice of Judo enhanced. At Luccas funeral he was presented with an honourary black belt which he would have reached in life, an incredibly emotional moment.
Our foundation has been set up as a legacy to Lucca and to assist up-and-coming Judo athletes to realise their dreams. The foundation will help fund those young athletes who are experiencing financial hardship, to be able to attend future camps and competitions locally, nationally, and overseas. Judo as a sport in Australia struggles to attract funding. We believe Judo deserves our support, as it offers so much to the young people who practise it; teaching them that through effort they can accomplish their life goals. Connection and community are vital to our wellbeing and Judo was at the centre of this. This foundation is not set up to produce world champions (although that may happen) its about connection to a grounded sport and the possibilities within it.
Thank you so much for your support.
