Donations received before June 30 will receive a link to watch a short film which shares the story of Matt and his courageous journey of love and literacy.
Matt is a courageous young man who turned his back on addiction and crime for the sake of his children. His courage, clarity and self confidence improved alongside his reading and writing.
Matt's not alone. Did you know only one in two Tasmanians of working age are functionally literate? That means that half Tasmania’s adult population do not have sufficient reading, writing, or language comprehension and expression skills, to manage their daily lives and function fully in their communities.
For people with low literacy, information on medicine bottles, in recipes, maps and the internet may be difficult to access. This impacts people’s capacity to read to their children, find a job, understand public health messages about the pandemic, navigate government services, and build meaningful connections with others.
Every Tasmanian, no matter their age, background or lived experience deserves a choice and a voice, and with the right communication skills, everyone can live whole-hearted and productive lives.
