In 2021, 94.6% of The National Health and Medical Research Council research grant applications were not funded. Cancer funding is in crisis.
In the 55 years that Cure Cancer has been operating we have made huge progress, and have seen incredible breakthroughs, but there is still so much more to do. With your help, lifesaving cancer research can advance further.
The last 10 years have seen incredible advances in research for some cancer types, which have resulted in vastly improved cancer care and survival rates. However, this isn’t the case for all cancer types.
Uterine cancer is the most common gynaecological cancer diagnosed in Australia. Yet, research into this cancer type has been overlooked and underfunded for decades compared to non-gynaecological cancers.
That is why Cure Cancer supports innovative early-career researchers like Dr Shafiq Syed.
Dr. Syed is changing the future of gynaecological cancer research. During his PhD, he identified the cell of origin for uterine cancer - a giant step forward for uterine cancer research, which has not progressed much in the last 70 years.
This year, with Cure Cancer funding, Dr Syed will focus on studying this cell of origin to understand the regulation and dysregulation, with the aim of developing targeted therapy for endometrial cancer.
This is just the beginning. We want to guarantee that all gynaecological cancers can be properly investigated and researched.
You have the power to fund life-saving cancer research. Please make a tax-time donation to accelerate our search for a cure.
